Why 2023 is the best year to apply for skilled migration (Subclass 189) visa to Australia and this year’s Skilled Occupation List
According to the latest announcement on Australia’s Migration Program, the Australian government has more than tripled the number of places for independent and state-sponsored skilled migration in the 2022-23 migration program from a total of 28,900 places last year to 97,100. This is done in recognition of Australia’s need for skilled migration to ease workforce shortages, as well as due to the increase of available job opportunities.
The biggest increase is in the Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189) category, which rose from 6,500 to 32,100 places. That is an increase of 25,600 more invitations available in this year’s program. The subclass 189 visa is a permanent resident visa for skilled migrants and does not require sponsorship from an employer or State/Territory. Applicants do not need to commit to live and work in a regional Australia and can include their families in the permanent residence application.
